Gee Whiz: | In 1911, a federal ban made it illegal to grow all Ribes, including gooseberries and other currants, because these plants can serve as an intermediary host of white pine blister rust (fungus) which can cause serious damage to American white pine trees. Research is being conducted to develop cultivars of Ribes spp. which are immune or resistant to the fungus. |
